Reducing environmental impact of healthcare: the infection control practitioner’s role
by Tom Badrick and Annette Stefan, RN, CIC
There are many different aspects of greening healthcare. Often what’s best for the environment is pitted against what’s best for patient safety, the bottom line, or compliance with the myriad regulations affecting healthcare organizations these days. It doesn’t have to be this way; greening healthcare can be a complementary function that can improve the environment, improve safety for employees, and enhance the care we provide to our patients.

Infection control practitioners (ICPs) can be not only involved in this effort but also leaders, adding value to their organizations and profession as well as giving themselves more job and personal satisfaction. Few other professionals in the workplace are so likely to see all parts of a hospital, from surgical suites to patient-care areas and all the way to medical waste-holding space.
